Drive For Five: USMMA Looks For Fifth Win Sunday Versus Vaughn

Complete Game Notes (PDF)

Setting the Scene... The USMMA men's basketball hits the court Sunday afternoon in the second game of a double header to take on the Vaughn Warriors.  The Mariners are coming off of their biggest win of the season, a 67-54 triumph over then-#9 Scranton.  Vaughn has won back-to-back games over Cooper Union and Pratt heading into Sunday's match-up.

Series History... Merchant Marine is a perfect 3-0 in the all-time series against the Warriors.  USMMA defeated Vaughn, 68-38, last season in Kings Point, NY behind 25 points from Reed Buck.  In that game, Vaughn committed 27 turnovers and shot just 22.4% from the field.

Williams Breaks Out... Freshman Andrew Williams (Lantana, TX) had a breakout weekend for the Mariners as USMMA went 1-1 in Landmark Conference action.  The rookie forward averaged a double-double over the two games and had a monster performance in the Merchant Marine's victory over Scranton.  Williams posted 15 points and 13 rebounds in 29 minutes of action against the Royals.

Bang for your "Buck"... Reed Buck (Lawrenceville, GA) currently ranks first on the team and second in the Landmark Conference in scoring, averaging 18.1 points per game.  The junior has reached double figures in scoring in every game this season.

Get Knocked Down, Get Up Again... Despite having a 4-3 record in 2012-13 the Mariners have not lost consecutive games this season.  USMMA has been resilient in contests following a loss.  Defeating St. Lawrence at the buzzer, knocking off rival Coast Guard, and downing nationally ranked Scranton to avoid back-to-back defeats.

Efficient and Effective... Williams and Nick Sergio (Patchogue, NY) ranked second and third, respectively, in the Landmark Conference in field goal percentage.  Williams is shooting at a 60.3% clip while Sergio has drained 59.5% of his attempts in 2012-13.

Up Next... The Mariners return to the court next Tuesday night for a non-conference tilt against Dickinson inside O'Hara Hall.  Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm and will be USMMA's last home game of the calendar year.
