Kings Point, NY – Nick Sergio (Patchogue, NY) posted a strong performance with 13 points and 15 rebounds but the Merchant Marine men's basketball team dropped a 59-50 decision to Goucher Saturday afternoon inside O'Hara Hall. The Gophers built a 19 point lead six minutes into the second half and a late charge by the Mariners would fall short. USMMA held the advantage on the glass, 48-40, but could not overcome a poor shooting performance, tallying a 31.3 percent mark from the floor and 20 percent from three-point range.
Goucher (2-4, 1-0 Landmark) was led by the 18 points of Richard Harris as the visitors extended an early lead into a 10 point halftime advantage, 32-22. The Gophers shot 41.9% in the opening half but were limited to just 26.1% in the second half. Trae Lindsay paced Goucher with nine rebounds, including a game high six offensive boards.
Merchant Marine (2-2, 0-1 Landmark) netted all four of its trifectas in the second half and was able to trim the Goucher lead to just seven at 53-46 on a triple from Reed Buck (Lawrenceville, GA) with 2:26 remaining in regulation. Both sides locked down defensively until Buck struck again with a jumper that made it a five point game, 53-48, with 59 seconds on the clock. Buck finished the afternoon with 14 points and seven rebounds despite shooting 5-of-21 from the floor.
The Gophers were able to keep USMMA off the scoreboard late while Goucher hit 6-of-8 from the charity stripe in the final minute to eventually secure the 59-50 triumph.
Preston Padgett (Leavensworth, KS) drained a pair of three-pointers to finish with eight points along with four rebounds while fellow freshman Andrew Williams (Lantana, TX) secured eight points and six rebounds.
The USMMA men's basketball team will look to bounce back quickly as they head into a highly anticipated match-up with archrival Coast Guard Wednesday night at 6:00 pm inside O'Hara Hall.
