Kings Point, NY – Junior Midshipman Reed Buck has been named one of the top-three players in the mid-Atlantic region in the October release of DIII News, which is produced by SmallCollegeHoops.com. Buck averaged 20.6 points per game in 2011-12 and was named the Landmark Conference Player of the Year. Danny Brooks of Lebanon Valley and Jon Ward of Ursinus were also named to the region's top-three; no other Landmark Conference player was named to the top-24.
Buck was the first Mariner to ever be named Landmark Conference Player of the Year as USMMA enters its sixth season in the league. He will look to become the second player in conference history to repeat as player of the year immediately after Zach Ashworth of Scranton claimed the award in 2009-10 and 2010-11. Buck's 495 total points was more than any Merchant Marine player had scored in 12 years and is the 13th highest single season total in the 61 year history of the program.
The Mariners finished with a 12-13 record last season, including a 7-7 mark in league play and a victory over a Juniata team that played in the Landmark Conference Championship. USMMA will look to return to the postseason in 2012-13 after missing the playoffs via tiebreakers last year. Merchant Marine had made the Landmark Conference Tournament for three straight seasons and captured a league crown in 2009-10.
The USMMA men's basketball team will open the 2012-13 campaign November 16 at the University of Rochester Tip-Off Tournament.
