Mariners take fifth in men’s pre-season basketball poll

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy finished fifth in the Landmark Conference pre-season poll of coaches and sports information directors.

The Mariners, who accrued 45 points in the balloting, finished only three points behind third-place Susquehanna University (48) and just behind Drew University (47).

The Merchant Marine (14-12, 8-6), who reached the post-season for the third consecutive time, have two starters returning a pair of three-point sharp-shooters in Kevin Kerr and Reed Buck.

Defending champion University of Scranton was the pre-season choice to defend its title as the Royals accrued 77 points. They were followed by Catholic University (64).

Other schools in the voting included No. 6 Juniata College (43), seventh-place Goucher College (21) and Moravian College (19).

The Mariners open their season against SUNY-Maritime at Liebertz Gymnasium on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.
