KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 14, 2018) – On Wednesday, the NEWMAC Conference announced the postseason award winners and All-Conference Teams for football and USMMA had seven student-athletes represented on the All-NEWMAC Teams.
Senior defensive lineman Charles Deegan (Huntington, N.Y.) and junior return specialist Joe Vitelli (Warrington, Pa.) were selected by the NEWMAC head coaches to the First Team All-Conference, while five other Mariners landed on the Second Team – senior fullback Wiley Martin (Polo, Mo.), junior running back Tyler Reihs (Moorpark, Calif.), junior offensive lineman John Coughlan (Massapequa Park, N.Y.), junior linebacker Reno Dubreuil (Moorpark, Calif.) and senior defensive lineman Brian Harris (Yonkers, N.Y.).
This is the second-straight All-Conference recognition for Deegan, as he was also named to the 2017 All-NEWMAC Second Team. He finished the 2018 regular season 27 total tackles (16 solo and 11 assisted), including matching the team-high of 10 tackles for losses of 50 yards. He also had three sacks, a forced fumble and fumble recovery, an interception and a pass break-up on the season.
Vitelli is atop the conference and currently ranks fifth in the nation with 832 combined kick return yards. This is his second selection to the All-NEWMAC First Team, as he earned the honor as a wide receiver in 2017. The junior also received praise from the Liberty League back in 2016 when he was selected as an honorable mention All-Liberty League Specialist for returns. Thus far in 2018, Vitelli has amassed 686 kickoff return yards on 32 returns (21.4 yards per return) and 146 punt return yards on 20 returns (7.3 yards per return).
Martin is the Mariners' second leading rusher this season, as he has compiled 356 yards on the ground and is tied for the team-lead with five rushing touchdowns. He averages 3.9 yards per carry and 44.5 yards per game. Martin was a First Team All-Liberty League fullback in 2016 and, after his freshman campaign in 2015, was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Year and an Honorable Mention selection.
Reihs has amassed 307 rushing yards on 66 carries this season (4.7 yards per carry / 34.1 yards per game). He has found the end zone four times so far in 2018. This is the first All-Conference selection of his career.
Coughlan, the Mariners' left tackle, is part of the Mariner offensive line that has helped lead Merchant Marine to the eighth-best rushing offense in the nation with 276.9 yards per game. The Mariners are also 23rd in the country in fourth-down conversion percentage behind the offensive line's efforts, converting 62.1% of their fourth down chances.
Dubreuil is USMMA's top defender with 54 total tackles (29 solo and 25 assisted). He is tied with Deegan for the team-lead with 10 tackles for losses of 48 yards. The junior has also registered 3.5 sacks on the season, while forcing two fumbles and breaking up three passes.
Harris ranks fourth on the Mariners with 37 total tackles (18 solo and 19 assisted). Two of his tackles were for losses of combined 12 yards, including one sack for a loss of 11 yards. The senior has also forced one fumble, recovered a fumble and broke up one pass on the season.
