KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 4, 2017) – On Saturday afternoon, the USMMA football team welcomed in NEWMAC opponent Catholic for a 12-noon tilt on Capt. Tomb Field at Brooks Stadium. The football program honored Brice Moore (Pace, Fla.), DeVar Jones (Albany, N.Y.), Luke Tiefenthaler (Freehold, N.J.), Eric Rainear (Buena, N.J.), Anthony Sandoval (Palmdale, Calif.), Aaron Rice (Vermilion, Ohio), Isaac Lee (Grapevine, Texas), Justin Sydlowski (Plymouth, Mich.), Joe Castellano (Middletown, N.J.), Kyle Carmody (Albuquerque, N.M.), Matt Dunaway (Portland, Ore.), Jake Murphy (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Devin McCorvey (Evans, Ga.), Matthew Dudo (Beaver Falls, Pa.), Bob Heyward (Islip Terrace, N.Y.), William Marino (Mount Kisco, N.Y.), Phillip Espinoza (Wood Dale, Ill.), Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and Erik Swayne (Great Falls, Va.).
On the gridiron, the Mariners tied a 57-year old program record, as they put up 62 points against the Cardinals. The last time they scored that many points was a 62-0 blowout over RPI back in 1960. The victory improves the Mariners to 4-4 (3-3 NEWMAC) on the season, while Catholic falls to 4-5 (2-4 NEWMAC) in defeat.
All nine touchdowns on the day came on the ground, as senior Brice Moore rushed for a team-high 104 yards and found the end zone twice. Moore was also 2-for-3 in passing with 115 yards, including an 81-yarder to sophomore Joe Vitelli (Warrington, Pa.). Junior Luke Tiefenthaler ended the day with 90 rushing yards and a game-high three TDs. Senior DeVar Jones had the first touchdown of the day and junior Wiley Martin (Polo, Mo.) and sophomore Krystian Abbott (Lansing, Kan.) also ran in a TD apiece.
Another Academy record was achieved today, as senior kicker Jake McDonough broke the single-season record for PATs, as he put eight through the uprights and he now has 38 PATs on the year. The previous record was 34 set by Todd Wendorf '88 back in 1985.
Defensively, junior Trever Huss (Orange City, Iowa) led Merchant Marine with nine tackles, including a team-high 3.5 for combined losses of 10 yards. Classmates Brooks Cannell (Ambler, Pa.) and Jake Wallace (Pittsburgh, Pa.) both ended the day with seven stops apiece, as Wallace had a sack for a loss of six that forced a fumble (which was recovered by Catholic) and Cannell broke up one pass. Juniors Brian Harris (Yonkers, N.Y.) – five tackles – and Charles Deegan (Huntington, N.Y.) – three tackles – also had a sack each.
Senior Erik Swayne contributed to the victory with two punts that averaged 39 yards, with a long of 42 yards that was downed inside the Cardinals' 20-yard line, while freshman Matt Restifo (Hudson, Ohio) amassed 33 kickoff return yards on three returns to go along with 68 rushing yards, including the longest run of the day, which was 64 yards.
For Catholic, freshman quarterback Brady Berger threw for 351 yards on 24-of-41 passing with four TDs. Junior Andrew Lunarola caught four passes for 82 yards, while senior Greg Holodak hauled in three for 80 yards with two TDs. Defensively, senior Nick Della Jacono led all players in the game with 16 tackles, while classmate Luke Kern had 11 stops on the day.
Up next, the Mariners will close out the regular season with the Secretaries' Cup matchup against arch-rival Coast Guard next Saturday, Nov. 11, up in New London, Conn. Kickoff is scheduled for 12-noon at the Bears' Cadet Memorial Stadium. The game will feature live stats, which will be available at this link, and a live video stream produced by ESPN on www.ESPN3.com or on the WatchESPN app on your tablet or smart phone.
