    USMMA senior quarterback Matt McDaniels (Malverne, N.Y.) has been in Baja, Mexico, since Sunday as he was selected to play in the Tazón de Estrellas representing Team Stars & Stripes – a 41-man roster made up of seniors from a total of 27 Division III institutions. McDaniels and the squad will square off against the CONADEIP All-Stars from the CONADEIP private universities in Mexico with the contest scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 19, at 3 p.m. EST at the Margarita Astiazrán de Fimbres Stadium in Baja.

    U.S. Merchant Marine Academy senior quarterback Matt McDaniels (Malverne, N.Y.) has been selected to play in a DIII Senior All-Star Game, as it was announced earlier this week that he will represent Team Stars & Stripes at the Seventh Annual Tazón de Estrellas in Mexico. The opponent for the contest will be the CONADEIP All-Stars selected from the CONADEIP private universities in Mexico and the game is scheduled to be played next Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Margarita Astiazrán de Fimbres Stadium in Baja.
  • Martin Named Liberty Rookie Of The Year; Eight Total Mariners Honored Including Two First Teamers

    U.S. Merchant Marine Academy freshman fullback Wiley Martin (Polo, Mo.) was named the 2015 Liberty League Rookie of the Year on Wednesday morning when the league announced its postseason awards. Eight other Mariners earned accolades, including senior Matt McDaniels (Malverne, N.Y.) and junior Parker Johnson (Middletown, Md.) landing on the First Team All-Liberty, while three earned a spot on the Second Team and Martin along with two others were named All-Liberty Honorable Mentions.

    The USMMA football team lost to Liberty League foe St. Lawrence, 21-14, in the final game of the regular season on Saturday at the Saints’ Leckonby Stadium. In defeat, the Mariners end the year with a 3-6 overall record (2-5 Liberty), while St. Lawrence retains the Hoffman Cup and wins the 2015 Liberty League title with an 8-2 record, including a 6-1 mark in conference action.

    On Monday, the Liberty League announced the weekly awards for football and USMMA senior quarterback Matt McDaniels (Malverne, N.Y.) earned a spot on the weekly honor roll for his performance in the Mariners’ 24-14 home victory over Union College this past Saturday. This is the second time this season that McDaniels landed on the weekly honor roll, as he also did so back on Oct. 17.

The accolades come after the duo’s performances in the Mariners’ exciting 22-21 home victory over Springfield on Saturday.

    Coming into Saturday’s action, the USMMA football team hadn’t defeated Springfield College in 18 years, and it took a frantic final couple of minutes at Brooks Stadium to change that, as the Mariners edged the Pride, 22-21, for their first Liberty League win in two seasons.

    On Saturday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy football team traveled up to RPI for a Liberty League showdown. It was the Mariners’ first road game of the year. The host Engineers came out on top, 27-7, which dropped USMMA to 1-3 (0-2 Liberty) on the season, while improving their own record to 4-1 (2-0 Liberty).

    USMMA 11th-year head football coach Mike Toop was invited to and attended a platelet donor recognition breakfast & awards ceremony on Thursday at the New York Academy of Medicine. The breakfast was hosted by the New York Blood Center and sponsored by the MetLife Foundation.

    This past Friday night, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Athletics Department inducted five new members into its Hall of Fame as part of its 16th class to be included. The induction ceremony was in conjunction with the Academy’s and the USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation’s (AAF) Homecoming celebration this past weekend. The Alumni Association and Foundation hosted the event in Melville Hall on campus here in Kings Point.

Freshman defensive back Dominic Spadafore (Lodi, Calif.) earned Rookie of the Week honors, while senior defensive back Skyler Stone (Glen Allen, Va.) was named to the weekly honor roll. The honors come after the duo’s performances in the Mariners’ 14-3 season-opening victory over rival Coast Guard on Saturday for the Secretaries’ Cup.

    This Saturday will be a big day on campus here at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, as three teams host arch-rival Coast Guard in what is expected to be another great chapter in the historic rivalry. The men’s soccer, women’s volleyball and football teams are welcoming in the Bears for the first three contests of the annual Superintendent’s Trophy.
  • Former Mariner Assistant Bill Polian To Be Inducted Into Pro Football Hall Of Fame This Weekend

    This weekend, former U.S. Merchant Marine Academy assistant coach Bill Polian will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Polian was an assistant at the Academy for five years under former Mariner head coach George Paterno during the 1970’s. During his tenure at USMMA, Polian coached current head coach Mike Toop.
