Merchant Marine Tabbed Seventh in 2012 Liberty League Preseason Poll
The 2012 USMMA Football team has been picked to finish seventh in the Liberty League, in the annual preseason poll of the league's head coaches. The Mariners earned 13 points in the voting and were tied with WPI for the seventh position. Hobart, the 2011 champions, were the unanimous selection to capture the crown again in 2012.
Merchant Marine returns a pair of dangerous weapons on the offensive side of the ball in 2012. Quarterback Alex Coviello (Cape Coral, FL) will look to repeat his production from 2011 as the senior signal caller racked up over 1,300 all-purpose yards as a junior. He will have sophomore lineman Jacob Margrey (Baldwinsville, NY) to run behind. Margrey picked up First-Team All-Liberty League accolades as a freshman, clearly demonstrating he has the potential to be a dominant force in the trenches throughout his career.
The Mariners were tops in the league in rushing last season, averaging 239.4 yards per game. Big wins for the Mariners in 2011 included a 35-28 shootout victory over rival Coast Guard in the Secretaries' Cup as well as 31-24 triumph over Rensselaer in the season finale.
Springfield secured the remaining first-place vote and finishing the polling in second, just ahead of Union College in third. RPI, Rochester, and St. Lawrence were picked fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively by the coaches.
The Merchant Marine Football Team kicks-off the 2012 season this Saturday as they clash with Susquehanna in Selinsgrove, PA. Kick-off is set for 4:00 pm.
