BETHLEHEM, Pa. (April 20, 2019) – The USMMA baseball team swept former Landmark Conference opponent Moravian College on the road on Saturday at the Greyhounds' Gillespie Field, taking the first game, 10-8, before winning the second, 4-3.

With the victories, the Mariners improve to 25-9 overall on the year, while Moravian falls to 15-17-1.

Merchant Marine hit five extra-base hits in the scheduled seven-inning opener, including three home runs. Two of the homers came in the first inning – a two-run shot by sophomore Vincenzo Alteri (Watertown, N.Y.) and then a three-run bomb by freshman Joshua Costlow (Lithia, Fla.). The third home run came in the second, a solo shot by freshman Garrett Aichele (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) that made it 6-2.

Aichele also had a triple, while senior Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) added a double. Costlow finished with a game-high four RBIs, as he also had a sacrifice fly in the third that made it 7-3. The Mariners added three more runs in the fifth on Aichele's two-run triple and then he scored after an error the following batter.

Three Mariners recorded multi-hit games, as Aichele was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, Alteri finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run and junior Matt Mundorf (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) was also 2-for-4 and scored once.

On the mound, sophomore Quinton Heck (Massillon, Ohio) earned the win after hurling 3.2 innings of relief, giving up two runs on five hits with one strikeout. Classmate Andrew Hunt (Severna Park, Md.) got the save after tossing the seventh inning and allowing just one base-runner on a hit and striking out two.

In the second game, a scheduled nine-inning affair, Moravian jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third, but the Mariners scored two in the sixth on another two-run home run by Alteri, and then another two to take the lead in the eighth on an RBI triple by Cunningham, who then came across to score on a wild pitch.

Alteri finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Cunningham was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Aichele also scored a run in the contest.
