OLD WESTBURY N.Y. (March 16, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team lost its road game to Division II NYIT on Saturday by the final score of 3-1. The loss drops the Mariners' record to 6-5, while the Bears improve to 8-3.
After four scoreless innings, USMMA broke through with a run in the top of the fifth after an error by NYIT that allowed sophomore Colin Baker (Clyde Hill, Wash.) to score. The Bears answered right back in the bottom half of the inning after taking advantage of a Mariner error after a bunt single that brought home a runner from second.
NYIT went ahead in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out RBI triple followed by an RBI single that made it 3-1.
The Mariners mustered five hits on the day, with sophomore Vincenzo Alteri (Watertown, N.Y.) getting three of them, as he went 3-for-4. Baker had a double and senior Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) had Merchant Marine's other hit.
On the mound, senior John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.) suffered the loss despite pitching 7.2 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts.
Sunday's doubleheader against Castleton has been cancelled due to poor field conditions. Up next, the Mariners will play host to non-conference opponent Baruch College this Tuesday, March 19. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Lower Roosevelt Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
