WAYNE, N.J. (April 10, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team lost its road non-conference game at William Paterson, 7-6, in 10 innings on Tuesday at WPU's Jeff Albies Stadium. The Mariners' record drops to 21-5 overall, while the Pioneers improve to 15-8.
The Mariners held a 6-2 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning, but William Paterson rallied to tie it, including scoring two runs while down to their last out. The Pioneers won the game in the bottom of the 10th on a walk-off sacrifice fly.
Five different players knocked in runs for USMMA, with senior Jacob Sithong (Orlando, Fla.) leading the way with two RBIs, as he went 2-for-5 on the day. Junior Reilly Cherry (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and freshmen Alex Mesaros (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Vincenzo Alteri (Watertown, N.Y.) were both 2-for-5 with an RBI apiece. Junior Zack Winzer (Muskegon, Mich.) had the Mariners' other RBI, as he finished the day 1-for-4 at the dish.
Alteri also scored a game-high three times. Scoring the other three runs for the Mariners were Mesaros, Cherry and senior Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.), who went 3-for-5 on the day. Merchant Marine had two extra-base hits on the day, as Mesaros had a triple and Alteri had a double, and they also stole five bases – Sithong and junior Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) each with two and Alteri with the other.
On the mound, freshman Joaquin Munoz (Lubbock, Texas) got the start and lasted five innings, giving up one run on four hits with one strikeout. The Mariners got one inning of relief from the next three pitchers – sophomore Ben Kane (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and freshmen Andrew Hunt (Severna Park, Md.) and Quinton Heck (Massillon, Ohio). Junior John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.) suffered the loss, as he hurled 1.1 innings and was tagged for five runs (three earned) on five hits.
Up next, the Mariners host Skyline opponent Mount St. Mary this Saturday, April 14, for a doubleheader at Lower Roosevelt Field beginning at 12-noon.
