KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 18, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from visiting Oneonta on Saturday at Lower Roosevelt Field, blanking the Red Dragons, 3-0, in the opener before a 4-2 victory in the second game. The Mariners' improve to an impressive 10-2 on the season with the two wins, while Oneonta falls to 6-9.
Freshman starter Joe Raab (Edwardsburg, Mich.) was masterful on the bump in the first game, as he finished the day with nine strikeouts in a complete-game, one-hit shutout for his third victory of the season. The rookie was one out away from a no-hitter with two down in the top of the seventh before the Red Dragons broke through for their only knock of the contest.
Offensively, senior Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) went 3-for-3 in the game with a pair of doubles down the right field line and he scored one run.
The Mariners got all of their runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) singled up the middle to plate senior Jacob Sithong (Orlando, Fla.) and then Reinebold and Barnes both came around to score on a bases-loaded single by junior Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.).
For Oneonta, senior Nicholas Ponesse suffered the loss after hurling five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Classmate Christopher DiDomizio tossed the sixth inning and allowed just one hit – a two-out single by Barnes.
In the second game, junior Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.) got the nod and he was impressive. Like Raab, he picked up his third win of the season in a complete game. He tossed seven strong and allowed two runs (one earned) on just four hits while striking out 11.
Barnes opened the scoring in the game with a three-run homer in the bottom of the third. Reinebold and sophomore Wyatt Wilson (Chandler, Ariz.) both scored on the dinger. Wilson also ended the day with two stolen bases (one in each game).
The Red Dragons answered back with an unearned run in the next half-inning and then added another run in the fifth to make it a one-run game. USMMA got an insurance run on an infield-single by freshman Alex Mesaros (Pittsburgh, Pa.) that allowed senior Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.) to score.
Freshman Michael Dunne got tagged with the loss for Oneonta in the second game, as he lasted 4.2 innings and gave up three runs (none earned) on three hits. Senior reliever James McCarty finished the final 1.1 innings and gave up a run on three hits with one K. Offensively, senior Dalton Beatty supplied an RBI on a double in the fourth and classmate Donald Geloso had an RBI-single in the fifth.
Up next, the Mariners will travel to Brooklyn this Tuesday, March 20, for a non-conference tilt against Baruch College beginning at 4 p.m. at MCU Park in Coney Island. Live stats for the nine-inning affair will be available at this link.
