The USMMA baseball team completed a three-game series against first-place Moravian over the weekend and won just one contest against the Greyhounds. Danny Collins (Sleepy Hollow, NY) hit two home runs in the three-game set.
Game 1: Moravian 2 – USMMA 0 (7 Innings)
Moravian starting pitcher Rob Solano flirted with perfection, not allowing a base runner until a Cameron Stadele (Alpharetta, GA) double in the fifth inning. The Greyhounds got a run in the second inning on a Mike Roethke RBI single as well as a Justin Pilchman double in the top of the sixth.
Timothy Arner (Allentown, PA) pitches seven innings and allowed just six hits in a tough-luck loss. Collins ripped a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate. However, Solan would close the door as the Greyhounds claimed the series opener, 2-0.
Game 2: USMMA 5 – Moravian 3 (7 Innings)
USMMA jumped on the Greyhounds early in game two of Saturday's double header, hanging up four runs in the bottom of the first. Stadele started the scoring with a bases-loaded, two-run single to make it 2-0. Jake Martin (San Diego, CA) followed with a fielder's choice RBI while Joseph Policastro (Hauppauge, NY) singled home another run to cap the frame.
Moravian pushed across a single marker in both the third and fourth innings. Patrick Morgan (Roxboro, NC) tossed four innings in the seven inning affair to earn his second win of the year. Collins supplied a solo shot for an insurance run in the sixth. Martin came in for a two-inning save as the Mariners earned a double header split with a 5-3 victory.
Game 3: Moravian 24 – USMMA 11
Moravian scored early and often, posting eight runs in their first at-bat and five runs in the third inning. The Greyhounds got seven strong innings from starting pitcher Nicolas Ampietro, who allowed three runs en route to the win. Anthony Gaetaniello led the way with a 6-for-6 day at the plate and scored five times.
The Mariners scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a long homer from Collins. USMMA also got a solo shot from Stadele in the sixth frame. USMMA also pushed across eight runs in the bottom of the ninth, including a trio on a three-run homer off the bat of Francis Grzymkowski (Stafford, VA). However, the Greyhounds eventually closed out a 24-11 decision to claim the rubber game of the three-game set.
