Madison, NJ - The USMMA baseball team was unable to complete a three-game sweep of Drew as the Rangers claimed a 2-1 decision Sunday afternoon. Warren Hartmann (Wyckoff, NJ) was responsible for the lone Mariners run with a triple in the sixth inning. Kyle Clausen (Southold, NY) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks.
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (11-7-1, 2-4, Landmark) scored the first run in the pitcher's duel on the strength of Hartmann's triple. Drew (8-10, 2-3 Landmark) finally broke through in the seventh inning against Clausen. Both Anthony Feltre and Robert Auletti notched two-out RBI singles to give the Rangers a 2-1 advantage.
Hartmann started the eighth inning for USMMA with a double to get the tying run in scoring position. Danny Collins (Sleepy Hollow, NY) was robbed of an extra base hit by a diving play in right field and Hartmann was doubled off second to end the Mariners threat.
Joseph Policastro (Hauppague, NY) singled in the top of the ninth with one out but USMMA was unable to push across a second run as Drew secured the 2-1 victory. Ken Myers pitched seven innings to get the win for the home team while Matthew Hunter tossed two innings for the save.
USMMA will return to action Tuesday as they travel to Scranton to make-up a previously postponed game.
