Mariners Season Ends with 4-2 Loss at Purchase in ECAC Metro Semis

Purchase, NY – The USMMA baseball team was unable to hold on to an early 2-0 lead and ultimately fell 4-2 to host Purchase College in the ECAC Metro Region Semifinals Sunday afternoon.  Timothy Arner (Allentown, PA) pitched all eight innings for the Mariners while surrendering just three earned runs.   However, Josh Spielberg was the hero for the Panthers, going 3-for-3 at the plate and driving in all four runs for the home team.

Merchant Marine (20-17) opened the scoring in the top of the second as Hunter Titus (Granbury, TX) ripped a RBI double that drove in Tyler Alger (Fairfax, VA).  A Panthers' fielding error later in the inning would allow unearned run to score and push the USMMA advantage to 2-0.  Spielberg cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom half of the second with a sacrifice fly.

Purchase (23-18) leveled the game at 2-2 in the fourth with a RBI double from Spielberg.  Spielberg's final blow came in the bottom of the sixth with a bases loaded, two-run single that gave the Panthers a 4-2 edge.  Matt Paz tossed 7.1 strong innings for Purchase, allowing just eight against the Mariners' potent offense.

Merchant Marine ends the 2013 campaign with the program's second straight 20-win season as well as six All-Landmark Conference players.
