Merchant Marine Clinches Playoff Spot with 7-3 Triumph at Juniata

Huntingdon, PA – Freshman Kyle Clausen (Southold, NY) pitched seven scoreless innings as the USMMA baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Juniata Sunday afternoon with a 7-3 victory.  The win clinches the Mariners a spot in the 2013 Landmark Conference Tournament.  USMMA stole five bases and racked up 14 hits to earn its first series sweep of the season.

Merchant Marine (16-12, 11-7 Landmark) immediately grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Warren Hartmann (Wyckoff, NJ) sacrifice fly.  The Mariners put up an additional run in the second and third innings with a RBI single from Keil Silva (Castle Rock, CO) and a Danny Collins (Sleepy Hollow, NY) single.  The cushion grew to 5-0 in the fifth inning with a two-run double off the bat of Nicholas Kopacka (Saugus, CA).  The Mariners continued to pile on the runs with an Andrew MacKinnon (Buffalo, NY) RBI single in the eighth while Kopacka struck again to plate a run in the ninth.

Junita (9-24, 4-11 Landmark) would strand 11 runners in the game as Clausen picked up his fourth win of his rookie season.  The Eagles brought in three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning but it would not be enough as the Mariners secured the 7-3 victory.

The USMMA baseball team will have a Landmark Conference bye next weekend and will instead play four non-conference games in the upcoming week.  The action begins Tuesday afternoon against St. Joseph's (BK).
