Bethlehem, PA – The USMMA baseball team was unable to complete a three-game sweep of the Greyhounds Sunday afternoon as Moravian defeated the Mariners, 8-5. Jacob Wood (Richmond, VA) and Nicholas Kopacka (Saugus, CA) paced Merchant Marine at the plate with two RBI each. Brad Suciu (Zanesville, OH) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for USMMA in the loss.
Merchant Marine (11-9, 7-5 Landmark) jumped on the Greyhounds early as Kopacka laced a RBI single through the left side of the infield to make it 1-0 in the second inning. However, the home side would take a 2-1 lead in the fourth frame on a rally that was highlighted by a Joseph Connell run-scoring triple. Kopacka leveled the game in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly that chased home Danny Collins (Sleepy Hollow, NY) for an unearned run. USMMA grabbed a lead on the next play as Wood put down a suicide squeeze bunt to plate Cameron Stadele (Alpharetta, GA) and make it a 3-2 affair.
Moravian (13-12, 6-6 Landmark) answered in its half of the sixth with four runs as five of the first six batters reached base, forcing the Mariner starter from the game. Jimmy McCarthy led the Greyhounds with two RBI in the victory. Suciu finished the sixth on the mound for USMMA but Moravian held a 6-3 advantage heading into the late innings.
The Mariners cut the deficit to 6-5 in the eighth inning without the benefit of a hit as the Greyhounds committed three errors in the frame. Wood and Joseph Policastro (Hauppauge, NY) did tally one RBI each by producing a run with productive outs. However, Moravian put up two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth while Chris Soltys picked up a two inning save to secure the 8-5 win for starting pitcher Rob Solano.
The Mariners will return to action Tuesday at 5:00 pm for a non-conference contest against Lehman at Lower Roosevelt Field.
