Kings Point, NY - Danny Collins (Sleepy Hollow, NY) and Warren Hartmann (Wyckoff, NJ) both posted three RBI in the Mariners 9-5 victory over John Jay Thursday evening at Lower Roosevelt Field. Joseph Policastro (Hauppauge, NY) picked up the win on the mound and finished his day with four straight scoreless innings. USMMA was able to overcome seven errors in order to earn its fourth win in the last five games.
John Jay (2-13) jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the first inning as Ryan Corrigan cleared the bases with a three-run double to right center field. However, the Bloodhounds would not score again until the seventh inning.
Merchant Marine (9-8) cut into the deficit in the third frame as Tyler Alger (Fairfax, VA) knocked a RBI single through the left side of the infield to bring home Jacob Wood (Richmond, VA). USMMA drew closer in the fourth as a Collins sacrifice fly plated Hartmann who singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The Mariners broke through in the fifth inning with a trio of runs as Hartmann smashed a two-run triple to right center and immediately scored on a hard hit single from Collins.
The visitors would answer to make it a one-run game, 5-4, in the seventh inning on the strength of a Dennis Lopez two-out single. USMMA got the marker back in the bottom half of the frame with a first-and-third play that resulted in Jake Martin (San Diego, CA) stealing second and Collins swiping home. The Mariners tacked on three runs in the eighth with Hartmann and Collins again tallying a RBI along with a run that resulted from a Bloodhounds throwing error.
John Jay scratched out an unearned run in the ninth but Martin limited the damage and closed the door to seal the 9-5 triumph. The USMMA baseball team returns to action this weekend for a three-game road Landmark Conference series against Moravian.
