Mariners Top Crusaders 9-0

Staten Island, NY -- The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (3-4, 1-0 LC) bested the Crusaders of Susquehanna University (3-9, 0-1 LC) Saturday afternoon by a score of 9-0 in Staten Island, NY.

All nine Mariners in the starting lineup recorded a hit as Kings Point was able to skate by Susquehanna despite fighting through snowy conditions on the College of Staten Island campus.

USMMA's offensive attack struck quickly, as a leadoff walk followed by a booming double to right field by junior Andrew MacKinnon (Buffalo, NY) got Kings Point going.  The heart of the order drove in the runners on base; setting the tone for the game early on.

Overall, the Mariners tallied two runs in the first inning, three in the second, and four in third as it would prove to provide more than enough support for junior pitcher Timothy Arner (Allentown, PA) to sail to victory.

Arner picked up his first win of the season, throwing a seven-inning complete game shutout, while allowing only two hits and picking up four strikeouts.

Juniors Danny Collins (Sleepy Hollow, NY) and Warren Hartmann (Wyckoff, NJ) each recorded two hits apiece while driving in three and two runs respectively.  Sophomore Joseph Policastro (Hauppauge, NY) also had a pair of hits, three Runs Batted In, and came around to score three times.

A total of six different Mariners crossed home plate for Kings Point, as Merchant Marine received contributions up and down the lineup.

USMMA will continue their series against Susquehanna with a pair of games on Sunday, March 17 starting at 12:00 PM.
