Mariners Swept by Catholic in Three-Game Set
KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The United States Merchant Marine Academy found themselves on the losing end of a three-game sweep, dealt to them by Catholic University. The Mariners fell to the Cardinals 8-3 and 5-8 on Saturday, and were defeated again on Sunday by a score of 18-4. The Mariners fell to 16-11 overall and 9-6 in Landmark Conference play, while the Cardinals improve to 21-12 overall and 8-4 in Landmark Conference matchups.
The Cardinals scored eight runs in each of the first two games while the Mariners were only able to muster eight runs in the two games combined. Senior Andy Martin and Junior Dustin Thomsen both threw six innings in the first two games but each was tagged for eight runs and double-digit hit counts. Sophomore Warren Hartmann provided a bit of excitement in game one with a 2-4 day that included a solo home run. Sophomore Danny Collins also contributed to the offense in game two, going 2-4 with two RBI's and a run scored.
In game three, the Cardinals poured it on, unleashing 18 runs against the Mariners. The Mariners gave up 23 hits and walked nine batters in an 18-4 rout. Sophomore John Martin took the loss, lasting two innings and surrendering nine runs on 10 hits. The Mariners offense struggled against Cardinals starter Justin Alessandro, who gave up four runs, two of them earned, on three hits over five innings. Hartmann was 1-3 with three RBI's, while sophomore Nicholas Kopacka was 2-4 on the day.
