KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The United States Merchant Marine Academy lost the first of a three-game set to Moravian College, 6-2, in Kings Point on Friday. The Mariners fall to 13-8 overall and 7-3 in Landmark Conference play, while the Greyhounds improved to 18-10 overall and 9-1 in conference matchups.
The Greyhounds jumped out to an early lead, putting one on the board in the top of the second on an RBI single by senior Blake Shortall. The Greyhounds then added three more in the top of the third on a sac fly from sophomore Matthew Gutkes, an RBI double by Steinman, and Hanson reached on an error to score Rock from third.
The Mariners would put up a run in each of the next two innings – a sac fly from sophomore Danny Collins in the bottom of the fourth and an RBI single from senior Andy Martin in the bottom of the fifth – but it wouldn't be enough to catch the Greyhounds. The Mariners dropped the contest, 6-2, the final score.
Sophomore John Martin took the loss for the Mariners, allowing five runs, four of them earned, on six hits over six innings of work. Freshman Chris Lansberry earned the win for the Greyhounds, surrendering two runs, one earned, on eight hits while striking out five over nine innings.
