KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The United States Merchant Marine Academy completed a three-game sweep of conference rival University of Scranton in Scranton, Pa. on Sunday. The Mariners improve to 10-6 overall and 5-1 in Landmark Conference play while the Royals fall to 9-9 overall and 2-4 in conference matchups.
The Mariners jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first frame. Freshman Cameron Stadele grounded into a fielder's choice with two men aboard, scoring senior Andy Martin from third. Sophomore John Martin followed up with an RBI single to give the Mariners an early 2-0 lead.
The Royals chipped away at the Mariner lead with an RBI double from sophomore Eric Pizzico in the bottom of the first. The score remained the same until the fifth inning when each side added two more runs – the Mariners on two bases-loaded walks, and the Royals on an error and a sac fly by freshman Ross Danzig.
Still holding onto their narrow one-run lead, the Mariners broke the game open in the top of the ninth. Freshman Jacob Wood smacked a two-run single to center and sophomore Nicholas Kopacka scored after senior John Hubach reached on a fielder's choice. The now four-run lead was too much for the Royals to come back from, as the Mariners went on to win, 8-4.
John Martin earned the win for the Mariners, giving up four runs, three of them earned, on seven hits over six innings of work. Senior Corey Gorman took the loss for the Royals, allowing five runs, two earned, on seven hits over six and two thirds innings.
Next up for the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the Mariner's return home to face St. Joseph's College on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
