Mariners Edge Past Baruch, Sweep Short Home-Stand

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The United States Merchant Marine Academy grinded out a win over Baruch College, 8-7 at home on Thursday. The Mariners improve to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in Landmark Conference play while the Bearcats fell to 7-8 on the season.

The Bearcats jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning off of Mariners sophomore pitcher Danny Collins. The Mariners responded immediately in the bottom of the inning as Collins helped out his own cause with a two-run single to tie the game at 2-2. The Mariners took the lead an inning later on an RBI single from sophomore Warren Hartmann.

The Bearcats tied the score again in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from senior Steve Hession, but the Mariners would battle back in the bottom of the fifth, retaking the lead on an RBI single from junior Dustin Thomsen. The Mariners added some much needed insurance as Collins again helped take back some of the runs he gave away with a two-run home run, bringing the score to 6-3 heading into the sixth.

Despite giving up an additional two runs in the top of the sixth, the Mariners wouldn't relinquish their lead, holding on for an 8-7 victory over the Bearcats. Danny Collins earned the win for the Mariners, giving up five runs on 11 hits over five and a third. Junior Eric Peralta took the loss for Baruch, surrendering six runs on nine hits over five innings of work.

Next up for the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the Mariners will travel to Scranton University for three conference matchups this weekend.
