Mariners Bats Fall Silent in Loss to Susquehanna
KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The United States Merchant Marine Academy dropped their third and final game of a three-game set against Susquehanna University in Pelinsgrove, Pa. on Sunday. The Mariners fall to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in Landmark Conference play while the Crusaders improve to 8-8 overall and 1-2 in conference matchups.
Where the Mariners had been in control during the first two games of the series, the tables were completely turned in game three as the Crusaders dominated on both the mound and at the plate. Susquehanna University junior Matt Boyd threw a complete-game shutout against the Mariners on Sunday, allowing only two hits and striking out four over nine innings of work. Boyd earned the win for the Crusaders, improving to 1-1 on the season. Sophomore John Martin took the loss for the Mariners, allowing six runs, two of them earned, over 3 2/3 innings.
Crusaders Junior Dan Wing and senior Ethan Rieker each went 3-4 on the day, recording two and five RBI's respectively. The two hits collected by the Mariners were singles from senior John Hubach and freshman Jacob Wood who each went 1-4 on the afternoon.
Next up for the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the Mariners return home to face SUNY Maritime on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
