Gregg Matalas is in his ninth year at the USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation (AAF) (www.usmmaaf.com) where he serves as the Director of Marketing / Blue & Gray. He directs the national golf tour, the Heidmar Blue and Gray Golf Classics (www.blueandgraygolf.com) which are major fundraisers for the USMMA Department of Athletics.
In nine years, Matalas has grown to the tour from five outings, averaging 500 golfers a year, to 11 events, which average over 1,500 attendees a year. The tour stops in 11 cities all throughout the country, all throughout the year, and is supported and attended by USMMA alumni, parents, family, friends and members of the maritime industry. In nine years, Matalas has raised over $4.5 million in revenue for the tour, which has provided over $2.5 million in proceeds for the Athletics Department.
The tour is coming off its two best years, as it saw a record 1,408 golfers in 2011 and record proceeds of over $400,000 in 2012. Additionally, golf legend Annika Sorenstam, the world’s former No. 1 golfer, participated in the 2012 San Francisco Heidmar Blue & Gray Golf Classic. USMMA graduate Bob Featherer ’68 hosted the Hall of Famer and helped manage a campaign that generated over $60,000 in proceeds.
Along with athletic fundraising priorities, Matalas also helps maintain and enhance the marketing and communication efforts at the USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation. His direction has helped streamline numerous services the AAF offers its constituents. Matalas additionally photographs and video outlines numerous AAF and Academy sponsored events.
Matalas actually returned to Kings Point in September 2003, as
he was a former Sports Information Assistant during the 2000-01
academic year. His ties to the Academy lay deeper, as his
grandfather, Charles, was a 1942 Kings Point graduate.
Additionally, Milton Houpis ’42, a close friend of Charles,
was the Godfather of Gregg’s father, Chris.
Matalas graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst
with a Bachelor's Degree in Sports Management. After completing
internships with the Western Professional Hockey League, New York
Rangers and USMMA, Matalas served as the Sports Information
Director at Lebanon Valley College (Pa.) for two years. From there,
he earned a Master's Degree in Media Management from Syracuse
University and its renowned S.I. Newhouse School of Public
Communications.
Matalas is a native of Bridgewater, NJ, and resides in Fresh
Meadows, N.Y.
