Four Midshipmen Named To Fall All-Sportsmanship Teams

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 15, 2017) – Both the NEWMAC Football Conference and the Skyline Conference announced the Fall 2017 All-Sportsmanship Teams recently and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy had a total of four Midshipmen-Athletes named to their respective teams – one for each fall sport.

The award is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each team, in every sport that best demonstrates the ideals of the conferences and their Codes of Conduct, regardless of their overall performance or statistics for the season. The All-Sportsmanship Team recognizes student-athletes who epitomize the ideals of sportsmanship.

The student-athletes selected demonstrate fair play, graciousness in victory and respectfulness in defeat. They are ambassadors for the team, both on and off the field, and galvanize their teammates toward their goals. These student-athletes exhibit respect for themselves, teammates, coaches, opponents, officials, spectators and the greater campus community.

The following four Mariner student-athletes were named to the All-Sportsmanship Teams for the Fall 2017:

  • NEWMAC Football: Senior DeVar Jones (Albany, N.Y.)
  • Skyline Men's Cross Country: Freshman David Aranda (Ridgecrest, Calif.)
  • Skyline Women's Cross Country: Freshman Kelly Caubo (Phoenix, Md.)
  • Skyline Women's Volleyball: Senior Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.)

In addition to being part of the NEWMAC and Skyline Conferences' mission statements, the NCAA Division III Philosophy Statement encourages "the development of sportsmanship and positive societal attitudes in all constituents, including student-athletes, coaches, administrative personnel and spectators."
